Winter sports: experience winter in Bayreuth and the region

Wintersport Fichtelgebirge

If you have never been to the Fichtelgebirge in winter, you have missed out. Because at this time of year, too, it is a paradise for winter sports.

Admittedly, this beautiful landscape in north-eastern Bavaria is not exactly known for 3,000-metre peaks. Instead, you will find a wintry variety here whose very own, unspoilt character turns it – charmingly and amicably – into a genuine winter sports experience. Look forward to skiing, tobogganing, ice skating and much more.

Skiing

Your dream holiday begins with being spoilt for choice. Why? Well, our network of cross-country trails and downhill runs really is enormous! But whatever you decide, you can’t go wrong with us – on the Ochsenkopf, the Kösseine, the Waldstein or the Kornberg. If you don’t yet feel quite confident on two skis (or a board), renowned ski schools will help you. There you will learn within a few days how to glide down the white slopes with your head held high.

You can find all the information about fun on two skis here:

Fancy a winter hike?

If you prefer to take things a little easier, the picturesque walks and hikes in and around Bayreuth are ideal for you.

The Hermitage in particular is a real highlight in winter. Strolling through the snow-covered historic park and discovering relics from the age of the margraves is almost like a fairy tale.

A short walk through the Festival Park is another good idea. Located not far from the historic town centre, it can also be combined perfectly with a guided tour of Richard Wagner’s Festspielhaus.

Winter hikes through the snowy Fichtelgebirge simply have to be mentioned too. The extensive network of trails offers the right route for every level of difficulty. A special highlight is the first certified winter hiking trail in Bavaria and Germany – the Ochsenkopfrunde. To get your strength back after the hike, numerous inns and restaurants invite you to stop off.

If you would like to try out a new winter sport, one of the guided snowshoe hikes is a great option. The tours are organised by a hiking guide from the Fichtelgebirgsverein. After a short introduction to everything you need to bear in mind when snowshoeing, off you go, experiencing the winter world in a completely new way. If you would rather head out on your own, there is a snowshoe rental point in Fleckl near Warmensteinach and in Fichtelberg.

Cross-country skiing

Our wonderful trails and the clear, fresh air are perfect for cross-country skiers too. Around 100 kilometres of cross-country trails at altitudes between 600 and 1,024 metres stretch through the Fichtelgebirge. The trail network offers the right route for beginners and novices as well as for professional marathon skiers. A special tip for the evening is the floodlit night trail at the Bleaml-Alm.

If you are still missing the right equipment for your winter holiday, there are several rental shops in the region. You will find advice on the right equipment as well as the option to hire it in Bischofsgrün, Fleckl, Mehlmeisel and Fichtelberg.

Toboggan runs and ice skating

Winter fun for the whole family is guaranteed on one of the many groomed toboggan runs in the Fichtelgebirge. So that young and old can enjoy themselves, there are different levels of difficulty. From a 200 m toboggan run to one 1.5 km long with a 12% gradient, you will find it all in the Fichtelgebirge. Some of the toboggan runs even have a so-called “magic carpet”, which makes the climb even more comfortable for tobogganers. A magic carpet is a kind of conveyor belt that carries people uphill while they stand on it. Because it gets dark early in winter, some slopes are even equipped with floodlights. This means tobogganing fun is guaranteed until 9 pm!

Fans of ice skating will also find several options in the Fichtelgebirge. Right next to one of the highlights of the Fichtelgebirge, the Fichtelsee, you will find a large ice rink. Another place to go is the ice rink at the Talstation Nord (valley station) in Bischofsgrün. So that you can enjoy the ice for a long time, both rinks are floodlit.

The Bayreuth ice stadium

The ice stadium in the middle of Bayreuth is a very special insider tip for all ice hockey fans and ice skaters. Find out all about it on the following page:

Relaxing after your winter sports programme

So the winter sports on offer have something for everyone! After these eventful days, a visit to one of the many thermal spas is a great way to relax and be pampered.

The popular Lohengrin Therme is located near the Hermitage. With around 1,000 square metres of water, the thermal spa with its state-recognised medicinal spring offers everything your heart desires. But it is not only the water that makes a visit a special experience. The sauna area offers a total of seven saunas with temperatures ranging from 55 °C to 95 °C. You will also find cosy relaxation rooms, cold plunge and foot pools as well as whirlpools and steam rooms. Throughout the day, you can choose from up to 20 different sauna infusions.

Another popular destination is the Siebenquell GesundZeitResort in Bad Weißenstadt am See (formerly “Weißenstadt”). There is plenty on offer here for children and adults alike. You will also find a good mix of exercise and relaxation at the Therme Obernsees. How about a relaxing massage, for example, to prevent sore muscles after skiing?
