Bayreuth beer – a town walk

BierKultur © Maisel

The culinary region of Upper Franconia is known above all for its beer. Naturally, this beer culture also runs through the town of Bayreuth.

Maisel´s Bier-Erlebniswelt (beer adventure world)

The starting point of our little tour is, how could it be otherwise, the Maisel brewery with its extensive Bier-Erlebniswelt. This is a particularly good place to experience the history of brewing and how it has changed up to the present day. At the Liebesbier you will also find one of the largest selections of beer in the region.

My beer tip: alcohol-free Hefe-Weißbier (wheat beer)

Yes, you really did read that correctly! Its colour is a reddish amber and it has a mild, fruity taste. Even for connoisseurs it is not that easy to tell it apart from a classic Hefe-Weizen (with alcohol).

Becher Bräu

Now we continue towards Altstadt. Beware of confusion! Bayreuth really does have a district called Altstadt (old town), but this does not mean the historic core in the centre – rather the most populous district of the town, which was known as Altenstadt until the beginning of the last millennium. As we walk towards this district, the gentle Mistelbach stream accompanies us all the way.

In Altstadt, the Becher Bräu, a family-run brewery, awaits us. In a cosy atmosphere you can enjoy various speciality beers as well as regional dishes and traditional inn classics.

My beer tip: Kräußen Pils

A pale beer, naturally cloudy from the yeast, with a fresh blend of citrus and herbal notes.

Manns Bräu

After this detour out of the centre, we head back into Baroque Bayreuth. We soon reach Friedrichstraße, one of – if not the – grandest streets in the town. Here we return to the subject of beer.

Here the Manns Bräu awaits us. In a rustic atmosphere, this brewery inn serves its own home-brewed beer with typical home-style cooking. Until the end of the 20th century, the building served as a communal brewhouse in which innkeepers who held brewing rights produced their own beer. The Becher Bräu, which we already passed in Altstadt, was one of them.

My beer tip: Manns Bräu Dunkel

Almost black in appearance, it has a strong, malty aroma with a slight bitterness.

Buschenschänke (seasonal tavern)

In the summer months, Bäckerei Lang (a few metres towards Jean-Paul-Straße), with its Buschenschänke that is only open on selected dates, offers a wonderful, almost secret atmosphere – and the beer simply tastes delicious.

My beer tip: Beck´n Bock

A deep amber colour, almost copper, with a slight sweetness and a great head of foam.

If you have not had enough after these stops, you can discover many more small bars and restaurants in the streets of the historic centre, serving all kinds of hop-blossom teas (a.k.a. beer) and inviting you to round off the day.
