Hiking insider tip: family walk around the Fichtelsee

Every week we share tips for walks and hikes in Bayreuth and the region. Today's hiking tip takes you to the Fichtelsee in the Fichtelgebirge.

Strictly speaking, today’s recommendation is no longer an insider tip, but because this short walk is absolutely worthwhile, we would like to share it with you anyway.

Between the Schneeberg and the Ochsenkopf lies the Fichtelsee, a lake that invites you for a walk in every season. Whether you need to cool off in summer, are going on a torchlight walk in autumn or are pulling the children around the lake on a sledge – the Fichtelsee is always worth a trip and there is always something new to discover. The walk of just under 2.5 km around the lake is particularly well suited to families, so you can pack the pushchair and the balance bike. You can park at the Fichtelsee campsite (Neubau district of Fichtelberg). From the car park, a path leads directly to the lake. On the eastern shore you can already see the Waldhotel „Am Fichtelsee“. Its lovely terrace overlooking the lake invites you to take a relaxing break or enjoy a good meal. Right next to the hotel you can go swimming or hire a pedal boat. And in the middle of the forest, a very pretty, shady playground is waiting to be discovered by the children. On the south side, in the forest a little away from the lake, rock formations invite you to climb and scramble. Want to shorten the circular walk? No problem! You can cross the lake via the island in front of the Waldhotel using two bridges. At the northern end of the lake, you can shorten the walk by taking a causeway across the grassland and moorland.
