Palace Fantaisie
The Summer Residence of the Margraves
The Schloss Fantaisie began in 1761, when Margrave Friedrich of Brandenburg-Bayreuth started building a new summer retreat. He drew inspiration for the construction from his numerous impressions of his Italian trip. After Friedrich’s death, his only daughter Friederike Sophie inherited the estate. She redesigned them according to her personal preferences and completed the property in 1763. Her new summer residence in Donndorf boasted not only an elaborate park, but also the inlaid cabinet completed in 1765.Today, an elaborate copy of the cabinet can be viewed in the west wing of the palace.
The Garden Art Museum
Since July 2000, the Schloss Fantaisie has been home to the first German museum for garden art. What makes the museum special is that it is dedicated exclusively to the history of garden art. Visitors experience a carefully selected collection of exhibits that represent the garden history of the 17th and 19th centuries. The museum’s unusual concept helps visitors perceive the exhibits differently and offers them a very special experience during their visit.

Park around the Palace Fantaisie

The Palace Fantaisie is surrounded by a generous park.
Similar to the Eremitage in the heart of Bayreuth, the Fantaisie Palace Park also has a long history. The garden primarily reflects three style phases between the 18th and 19th centuries:
- the Rococo
- sensitivity
- and historicism.
For your next walk, the park offers various attractions. The charming complex features a large fountain with water features, as well as winding corners with small crypts, rock formations, and sculptures.
The love for detail transformed the Fantaisie Palace Park over the years into an extraordinary excursion destination. Restoration work in the 1990s has allowed the park to regain its former glory.
