The Archaeological Museum is housed in the Italian Building of the New Palace, built in 1759/60. The hunting room, which is integrated into the exhibition rooms, is characterised by its
naturalistic stuccowork by J. B. Pedrozzi.

Eight rooms display artefacts from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages,
which the Historical Society has collected since its foundation in 1827.
The exhibits mainly come from the eastern part of Upper Franconia, with Franconian Switzerland
Switzerland and the surrounding area of Bayreuth form the regional focus.
Highlights of the exhibition in the Archaeological Museum include Neolithic stone axes found in Dressendorf, Bindlach and Glashütten, a jadeite axe from Haßlach and a flint dagger from Tröbersdorf as well as over 80 clay vessels from the Hallstatt period.

Exquisitely crafted bronze jewellery was found at Drosendorf near Hollfeld. These are vestment brooches depicting stylised water birds and are known as bird-head brooches.
A pair of bronze rings with highly stylised pairs of animal heads marks a highlight of Celtic craftsmanship in Upper Franconia.

Numerous text and display panels provide extensive information.
Reconstructions of a loom, a stone drill and an original
and an original pusher mill complement the exhibition with an
experimental area.

The Archaeological Museum is an absolute must for Bayreuth fans who are interested in history. For children, the experimental area is the highlight of a visit to the museum.

In addition, the Prehistoric Museum of Upper Franconia can be visited almost directly next door. History fans will also get their money’s worth here.
