Experience Bayreuth beyond the glamour of the Festival and the Wagner myth: this city tour takes you right into the abysses and ambivalences of the Nazi era.
Table of contents
The tour sheds light on places where ideology, culture and power collided – from the Haus der Deutschen Erziehung (House of German Education), a centre of National Socialist indoctrination, to the destroyed synagogue and the suppressed traces of Jewish life, and on to the former Friedmann department store.
The Stadthalle, too, once designed as part of the planned Gauforum, shows how Bayreuth was drawn into the megalomania of National Socialist urban planning.
Between Wahnfried, the Chamberlain House and the Wagner clan, a complex web of veneration, propaganda and conformity unfolds.
