About the composer behind the festival

The composer Christoph Willibald Gluck places the human being at the centre of his work.
150 years before Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, he explored like no other, through the language of his music, the depths and shallows of the human psyche. In doing so, he demanded the greatest possible passion, authenticity and intensity from all his protagonists and musicians.
This makes him perhaps the greatest humanist in the history of opera – and an extremely modern champion of truthfulness on stage.
